EEOC Workplace Discrimination Complaints High In 2009

Comments Off

New data released by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), marked 2009 the second highest number of workplace discrimination complaints ever filed.

Overall, the EEOC received more than 93,000 discrimination claims in 2009.

Through enforcement and mediation, complainants received more than $376 million. The largest percentage of bias cases (36 percent) alleged race discrimination and retaliation (36 percent). Sex-based charges were included in 30 percent of the filings.

The EEOC said the near-historic level of complaints overall may be due to a number of factors, including economic conditions, increased diversity and demographic shifts in the work force.
