A California Superior Court judge has granted class action status to a lawsuit that alleges Scripps Health Hospitals of overcharging uninsured patients since 2002.
The lawsuit contends that uninsured patients pay up to four times more than the patients who are covered by Medicare or private insurance companies for the very same medical procedures.
The class action status was approved by Judge Steven Denton.
The lawsuit seeks refunds that could exceed $100 million for 100,000 uninsured patients who allege they were overcharged by five Scripp’s hospitals. The lawsuit is also seeking penalties.
A Scripps spokesman said the company strongly disagrees with the accusations made against them. He further stated “Scripps is proud of their service to the community.”
